History of Business Administration Department

The Department of Business Administration was opened in 1966 with just 10 students to pursue undergraduate degree programme in Business Administration. The first set of students graduated in 1970.  It is located at the Kongo Campus of the University and it is one of the four academic Departments of the Faculty of Administration.  The other departments are the Department of Accounting, the Department of Public Administration and the Department of Local Government Studies & Consultancy Services.The Departments of Accounting and Business Administration together make up the Business School.

The Department of Business Administration has transformed from a modest beginning of only 10 students into the largest and most extensive of all academic Departments in the University in terms of staff and students population, number of academic programmes and facilities.  Currently, it offers a 4- year degree programme leading to the award of Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with specialization in Actuarial Science, banking and Finance, Management and Marketing.Side by side with the B.Sc (Susniess administration).In response current pension crisis in Nigeria,with effect from 2010/2011 Session, the Department will start running a 4 year B.Sc Insurance programme side by side with B. Sc Business Aministration Programme.The Department also runs the Master of Business Administration (Graduate) Programme both at Full-Time (24 months) and Part-time (36 months) . In addition, there is the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) that runs on Part-Time (12 months), M.Sc. Bus. Admin. Full-Time (12 months) and the PhD (36 months) Programme in Business  Administration.The department is also running Diploma in Insurance and Diploma in Management programmes in conjunction with the Institute of Administration and in response to the need for intermediate manpower by both public and private organisations in these areas.

 There are presently forty one (41) dedicated, motivated, committed and dynamic academic staff and (11) non-teaching staff serving the department.

Since its inception to date, the Department has produced large number of graduates for the economy particularly in the area of Management, some of whom are today occupying very important management positions in both public and private sectors of the economy and beyond.

Academic Programmes ultimately gain their validity and relevance only to the extent to which they are responsive to and address problems of society, thereby enhancing the quality of life and general well-being of society. The legitimacy of academic programmes lies in the ability to meet the needs and aspiration of its environment.

The Nigerian economy in particular and the global economic system in general have undergone series of significant changes which have created new trends, various developments, new needs and dramatic changes in all economic, educational, technological and social needs. Therefore, in the quest for validity, relevance, efficiency, ability and capacity to meet the challenges of the 21st century,it has become imperative for the Department of Business Administration to strategically reposition itself by continuosly responding to the soceital and economic needs of the country.This has been the major focus of the department in recent years.
